This is an extremely old thread. However, timeless for its applicability to everyday thought

How soon will it be that many kids out there won't know the meaning of the phrase "Be kind, please REWIND" (The DVD hit big).
How many of us contemporaries recall the 8-track & 4-track tapes?
I remember when almost all women (younger girls too) wore some kind of skirt or dress.

Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

I agree with all of the above!
I wonder if pants will ever become a garment only women wear

In the bigger picture?... none of the above, I'm afraid... at least for the forseeable future.

Kilts will continue to be a niche market for ethnic traditionalists and fashion freedom protagonists. I see no indications to suggest that's about to change.

    No indication?

Less that 5 years ago, one could not get a tartan kilt of any kind for under $300. Today there are well over 100 on E-bay alone at any given time. 8 years ago there was exactly 1 non traditional kilt maker out there (TFCK). Today there are over a dozen. Granted these are not 8 yard, hand sewn traditional kilts, but it is a start.

10 years ago (when I was getting married), I spent weeks trying to find kilt hires online, and found none. Today I can find a list in the US in less than 1 min.

Heck, is there anyone on this board that 10 years ago even considered wearing a kilt on a daily basis, much less actually did it?

Will kilts ever become fully mainstream? Who known, but it sure looks to me like it is heading that way.

I've used this example before, but think about men and earrings. 30 years ago, I had never seen a guy with an earring. 25 years ago it was only the rebellious anti establishment guys (kids) that got one ear pierced (and make sure it was the correct one). 15 years ago I was nearly fired from my job because I got mine pierced (for a play I was in). Today, while not every guy is pierced, or even half, it is not unusual at all. I've seen lawyers, teachers, businessmen all sporting earrings. Frankly, except in the most conservative arenas (and even then rarely), earrings have become a non issue.

It's not if kilts will be mainstream, but when.

I honestly thing that kilts will never become mainstream. Although I do agree with the earring analogy. I got my ear pierced (yes the correct one) when I was 15, I'm now 41. Tattooed at 21. Back then I would get comments and often not positive either. Now It seems everyone has an earring or tat, good for them but did they pay the same dues that I did. Those two items are low cost introductions and readily available, kilts are neither. They also transcend race and culture, for the most part kilts do not. How many of us see other kilted men everyday? If it wasn't for forums like this kilting might just be another closet thing or of only those who are Scottish and only on formal occasions.
We need to see affirmation to decide to wear a kilt. To see another man walk confidently down the street in a kilt speaks volumes to our confidence. The encouragement and approval we all receive from the rest of the X-Marks rabble gives us strength. Without this possibility would the regular guy on the street find the courage to don a "skirt" and walk around in public potentially exposing himself to ridicule. I know I for one would not be kilted today if not for this forum. 20 years ago an earring could be hidden by long hair, tattoos hidden by the sleeves of our coats. Many trousered will find this forum and the strength that comes from the like minded. Yes we encourage each other to go out and spread the gospel of the kilt. For it to become mainstream I can't see it. Please let me leave you with this thought though. Do we really want it to be that way? I personally like the power of the kilt, I don't want to lose that. One in a crowd of 5 kilted among a crowd of 1000 not kilted.
