I saw your pic and I like it. but it raises a lot of questions: Grey /Gray is always tricky ( hey, how can we expect something to be easy if we aren't even sure how to spell it?). Does your jacket have some texture to it, like flannel or is the mottled color printed on- or am I mistaken once again and it HAS NO mottled color? Enquiring minds want to know.
I like the jacket, but I would be very tempted to shorten its skirts a couple of inches. Have you played around with that? Have you tried to nudge it a little towards traditional by wearing a traditional shirt? Or does that miss the point and ruin the look?
RR is right, of course- it is a little out there, but you wear it well.
PS how are your HK tailoring adventures coming along?

Thanks, MacLl. I shall attempt to address your comments in order.
The jacket is a solid khaki colour... either I need better light or perhaps to clean my camera lens! My lass says it would look better with a different tartan, perhaps Douglas modern.
I think the length is OK because it doesn't extend past the fell of my kilt and is approximately the same length as the sleeves. This is consistent with the images of Sheriffmuir doublets I have seen, though some do have skirts shorter than the sleeves, as you suggest. I will also be wearing the jacket with p@ants, so I don't really want to alter it.
I have a black, Mandarin collar shirt back in Canada that would probably work nicely and also a belt, if wasn't wearing a waistcoat. My options are somewhat limited here, but I could try a more traditional shirt with a black waistcoat and report back... in this picture though, I was going for a more casual look.
The tailoring adventures are going well because there are some deals to be had. 3 custom made shirts for $50 CAD? OK! Specialty items like detachable collar shirts cost a premium though, and there is only one Highland tailor, so his prices are even higher than in North America or the UK

It appears that is a McRostie sporran too, correct?

It is made of cotton and has a casual pseudo-Sheriffmuir look to me. I've paired it with a plain, black tee-shirt (untucked ) and cap steel toe, beflamed Doc Martens.
I welcome your comments.

I like the jacket! - pseudo-Sgt. Pepper. I can picture that with a few different shirts. Looks good on you.

I'd not say this was at all "modern" in that it's not at all flash, more like "shabby chic"? Taken two years ago.

That's what they call provenance! Nice that you have a personal piece of wearable family history. Wear it in good health (and peace!)

I've always thought of myself as a Neo-Traditionalist in most aspects of my life. This certainly is a great thread.
Here are a few of mine.
Summer:

5 yard 13oz MacDonald modern, Cotton/Nylon shirt, self-dyed light Royal Blue hose
Winter:

8 yard 16oz MacLean Ancient, ragwool sweater, leather zip-up jacket.

I like 'em both!
