Ideal leather for plain sporran with lots of junk in it?

My sporran has a lot of junk in it. It's just heavy, there it is.
I am looking for plain black, not too shiny, not too flat.

Do I want vegetable tanned and black oil based dye, or latigo or what? Just plain black leather, not ostrich or bullhide or anything crazy, just plain black strong leather.

Yeah, I got a 20 ounce item in there, I'll be going with the 3/4" strap and strap loops wide and high on the sporran back. No, I am not going to take it out and leave it at home.

 Thanks,
 AK

Latigo is pretty stiff. It would be fine for the front and back. Maybe some lighter oil tanned for the gusset?

It's interesting to note that my full pocket horsehair sporran has the strap attachment on the inside front face of the sporran rather than the back. Something similar might help with maintaining the shape and support for you.
You might have to look at potential quick access issues, but I'm sure that could be worked around.

If you're 20lb training weight were in its plastic pouch mounted on the back face, it would likely be a case of... Open, lift, pull... I would guess

					I sent an email to:michael@theholstersite.com
yesterday about making me a sporran with snap in holder after seeing a fox head sporran he made. I'll let you know what he says.
 In the lower 48 I only need a 16 oz weight -

Hmm, your 20-oz item, if it's what I think it is, should probably be secured against the back panel of the sporran so it won't be loose in there, and is easily reachable. So I would probably make the back panel out of veg-tan leather, probably 10-12 oz minimum. The gussets and front panel can be lighter and softer since they're just holding the other regular junk, and not the heavy item. For those, I would use an oil-tanned leather like "chap leather" or similar.

Latigo is way too stiff for sporran use, unless it's for the strap or some other structural element.
