If you know somebody who has a kiln, you can lay the bottles flat in it and fore it. I don't know what temperature to heat it to. After it's cool, you'll have flat-bottle shaped serving trays. Or, place a few different colored marbles in the bottle, and stand it upright in the kiln. After firing, the glass will slump down over the marbles and make a pretty paperweight.

I think it is less than cone 06, if I remember correctly. I also seem to remember the bottles needing to be put on a good deal of kiln wash or something to keep it from sticking to the kiln shelves.
Maybe Paul could explain it better.

IIRC it was Sunset magazine that published an article many years ago about growing fruit inside a bottle. Short as I can make it, you place the bottle over the bloom while it will still fit through the neck and somehow secure bottle in place. Then spend the growing season adjusting the bottle so the ripening fruit doesn't touch the inside walls. They showed a pear, I believe, and when done you gently detach fruit, thoroughly wash, and fill the bottle with wine. Suppose you could do this with all sorts of fruit/veg/liquid combinations. Notice I say "you" -- while we have a prolific orange tree in the backyard, this project is way too labor intensive for me!

You're awfully close, Sydnie. "You" have to put the bottle over the branch after the bloom has been pollinated and has turned into a fruit bud, then once the fruit is ripe, pour in your favorite libation. A peach in a bottle of corn liquor is a prized possession around my neck of the woods.

My wife found a website that is selling bottles that have been cut in half. Some had been cut closere to the bottom to make ash trays band other stuff. The bottles are selling for anywhere from $12.00 to $40.00. Save your bottles and buy a bottle cutter. Then put them on a web site and make money.

Shades of the '60s when my bro-in-law made a set of glasses from the fancy-at-the-time Michelob bottles!

Shades of the late '90s when I did the same thing with Heineken bottles.

Guess you could also etch them.

Buy a bottle cutter or get a glass cutting blade for a Dremal tool, cut the neck off smooth the raw edges and use them as drinking glasses.

Re: Recycle use for old whiskey bottles

At a liquor store near us a few years back, I found a stopper/wick to recycle any empty bottle into an oil lamp. I have used it on a sake bottle I particularly liked, but if you had a whiskey bottle you were fond of you could very easily do the same.
