Hi
Just wondering if someone could give me some advice on the best kilt shops in Edinburgh? I've previously only bought ones from more 'touristy' shops on the Royal Mile.
But I've have a graduation and wedding coming up this year so I'd like to get myself a good quality made to measure kilt. I was planning on getting it in either the Derry or Ulster Tartan as that's where I hail from.
Or if there's better options that people here like in Glasgow I could easily make a trip over there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have used Hector Russell, Celtic Craft Centre and and Geoffrey (Tailor) who have all given me very quality and service. You will get a rather more personal service from the (smaller) Celtic Craft Centre.

In Edinburgh the largest quality kiltmakers are Geoffrey (Tailor) on the Royal Mile and Kinloch Anderson in Leith

Hector Russell on the Royal Mile (and also in Princes Street) are a large chain. Reasonable quality but at the lower end of the market

John Morrison on the Royal Mile is also now at the lower end of the market and is part of the Gold Brothers chain

If you are looking for really good quality at a reasonable price then look outside of Edinburgh (and Glasgow). Try R&I MacDonald at West Calder, just 15 miles west of Edinburgh. Their quality is second to none, their prices are competitive and they will bend over backwards to help

I can heartily recommend the Celtic Craft Centre for quality. Less so for communications. They did not inform me when my kilt was delayed well past the due date by unavailability of tartan from the mill, nor respond to my repeated E-mails asking what was happening. When I cancelled my credit card charge, suddenly I had wonderful service.

If you're close by and can walk into their showroom to ask, I would have no hesitation, but it's taught me to work with people closer at hand, which is a shame for CCC since they really do marvellous work.

You might like to look at "Rosekilts" by way of a personal reccomendation, Veronica is very knowledable on all subjects kilts. She recently did my Stewart Hunting weathered kilt which is all hand stitched.

That's great, thanks. There's just so many different places around here and I'm no expert, so I wasn't sure which places tend to have better quality items.
The majority of those places mentioned are within 15 minutes walk from my flat, so I think I'll have a wee wander around them all this weekend

I have always had excellent service from Geoffrey (Tailor) on the Royal Mile.

I have found Kinloch Anderson to be grossly over priced. Just a small thing, but we advocate here getting to know your kilt maker. KA state that it is not their policy to let you know who is making your kilt. They wanted to charge me £1,200 for my RAF kilt. By pure accident I approached the kilt maker they were going to use. He addressed me by name and stated that the cost to me would be £300!

It is my belief that they are trading on the fact that they hold three Royal Warrants.
