Re: Kiltmakers Edinburgh
I have always dealt with Gordon Nicolson of Nicolson Kiltmaker's on the Royal mile and have been very satisfied with their service and quality of product.

Re: Kiltmakers Edinburgh
Just another thing, as I am Irish I was planning on getting either my county or Province tartan. Although I do like the idea of getting a clan tartan but I'm not sure which I would be able to wear.
My great grandfather was apparently from Caithness, so although that's a bit of a distant link, I think that along with the fact I've lived in Edinburgh for 6 years qualifies me with enough of a Scottish link to wear a Scottish tartan
Now, my surname is Gillan, and as far as I'm aware it an anglisation of Mac Giolla Eoin.
Would I be right in saying that this is related to the surname, and clan Maclean?
If anyone has any idea about this it would be much appreciated.
Go raibh maith agaibh

Re: Kiltmakers Edinburgh
Hi Blackrose,
I have a database of some 30,000 surnames and their clan affiliations.
Gillan is claimed by Clan MacLean and by the Chattan Confederation.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Chas

You are absolutely correct. Gillan is a recognised name (or sept) of MacLean of Duart

Re: Kiltmakers Edinburgh
Thanks a million. My father thought that we were related to the MacLean clan in some way, but he didn't know the details.
I guess I'll have to give the MacLean of Duart tartans a wee look as well then

Re: Kiltmakers Edinburgh
I was toying with the idea of getting a MacLean tartan kilt, and was wondering if any of the native Scots here had an opinion on that.
I know that some of my friends here would disapprove of someone not Scottish wearing a clan tartan, but has anyone here found that to be a problem?
I can trace both sides of my family to Scotland 3 generations ago, but since then we've been settled in the North of Ireland. I don't know if this would qualify me enough though.
I wouldn't want to offend anyone so would it be more diplomatic if I just struck to the Irish tartans?

I'll also be a third to give a reccomendation to this! I had a "Russell Ancient" kilt made by hime, great quality and a fair price.
