Re: Elkommando returns
Hi Elkommando guys. You speak relatively highly of this kilt. The website says it has a 21.5" outseam. Is that from the top of the waist band to the bottom? And, how is this kilt in a breeze? Is the fabric heavy enought to keep it down, or is really light and therefore prone to fly up? How would you describe the weight? I'm 5'7" and a 33-34 pant size waist. Medium looks about right? Would you agree?
Looks like a fine outdoor around the house garment... very wearable and durable. Yes?
Thanks lads.

Re: Elkommando returns
OK lukeyrobertson I mesured my old front, back and sides at 21" top of waist band to hem. It's possible they added 1/2 inch to the new model or mine shrank. The waist is intended to ride just above your hip bones and your backpack belt just below it.
It's pretty bulletproof in a breeze with the lower snaps - I wear mine a lot on my bike and it stays down very well - aprons usuall plastered to the seat stem. My Sport Kilt hiker is a no go on the bike with the wind - Whee.
It is light weight but acts heavier than it is. I have yet to damage or even stain mine camping - draging wood to camp, fishing - I wade in chasing the big ones and it dosent get too heavy or hiking - on and off trail and sitting on the ground.
Take some care sitting (the apron chop) as the aporns don't side easily over each other and there is no back fold under the aprons - may scare the kiddies.
I happily wear this one anywhere but formal occasions.
One safety tip with any synthetic fabric treated or not - it dosent singe when exposed to fire, it melts at around 600 degrees and sticks to your skin.
I put on a cotton kilt if I am going to be drinking around the campfire. (I won't risk my wool kilts camping - $$)

Lukeyribertson,
Kilt is fine in a breeze. It flaps but never seems to fly up. I think because it is close fitting and hangs straight. I do not use a pin on the apron but occasionally have stuff in the cargo pockets which help weigh it down.
It is a light weight fabric but durable and sturdy enough to take a beating. It feels good wrapped around you. Comfort waist/hip band in the back feels great, especially with my frame pack. I'm 5'9", 32-33", pant size. The medium fits perfectly. A large size, I feel would be too large and not the close fitting straight hang I spoke of above. I can measure the length if you want. It reside in my car in case a spur of the moment hike presents itself. I think it a 21.5" very top to very bottom. Hits just above my knees when I have it comfortably sitting on my jeans' waist.

Woodsman, thank you for this. This is really helpful information. No worries about the measurement. With your help and other Elkommando wearers, it sounds like I'm reading the web page correctly and that this may be a great kilt for me around home in the mountains hiking.
Thanks so much!

Thanks guys, very much. Love the pics. I just noticed the piece about the "modesty" snap. What do you think of that? I can't imagine that it's all the comfortable. What experience have you with that built in option? And, I do like the aprons.
Best, fellas.

Modesty, what is that. Dont use it, just make sure I sit proper and watch who is behind me when I bend over. I prefer the aprons on the Elkommando over the modified narrow aprons on other modern kilts. Just my preference.

Right, Brewer... thanks! I've never really caught on to the modesty provisions on some kilts except for those wearers who may be doing ladder work! Cheers!

My only fear would be for the squirrels.
After all, their diet is nuts.

Never got around to installing the actual snap, but last summer I did a fair bit of cycling with a Sport Kilt over my cycling shorts. I put a safety pin through the under apron, and hooked it to the center pleat in the back. It was really nice for that purpose... Other than that, the only time I could see using it is if I were out on a walk, and things got really, really windy.
