You're never too old to have a happy childhood.
The story Alan related about talking to the older couple at the games? Well, a number of years ago, Frank Lux and I are throwing in a comp and we start talking to this guy on the other side of the crowd fencing who wants to get involved in the Games.
We sent him over to talk to one of the South Bay throwers, Jim Walker, to take in some practices. One thing led to another and that, boys and girls, is how Alan got HIS start.

50 years old here.. just did a 30km crosscountry ski race. Next year hope to do the 90km Vasa Loppet in Sweden.

This group of seniors (Dave Samis is a paddling mate of mine) just scaled Kilimanjaro!

I did my first triathlon at age 46. Competed on the US Team at the World Championships at age 58-70 and did the Ironman World Championships at 71. Age is not an excuse, it makes the accomplishment even more rewarding.
