    Re: Knit neck ties?

I wear silk knit ties frequently, even with the kilt.

They've never even gotten a second glance from me when I've seen them in thrift and antique stores, but seeing how they lay in your pictures makes a strong case for them. They must be infinitely more comfortable than any tie I've worn.

Here is a photo of me kilted wearing a knit tie. It is black, made by Hilditch and Key. The photo was taken after the burial of my father in Ottawa several years ago.

    1985 is what I think.

It's about time for that to come back then and be trendy, eh?

    Re: Knit neck ties?

I like the IDEA of the knit tie - the texture, the change of pace. But, like Tobus, I prefer a nice clean, tight knot with a dimple below, and woven silk or wool tend to do that best. I suppose if the knit were tight and smooth enough, and of a fiber that resisted stretching, I would be a willing guinea pig. Where's a tie engineer when you need one? I do vaguely remember some knit ties having a grosgrain backing, presumably to alleviate the stretching issue? As far as the bottom goes, given a choice, I would pick a point over a square.

Thumbs down Re: Knit neck ties?

Pass, I didn't wear those things back in the 80's either.

    Re: Knit neck ties?

    Matt ,

I think the texture of the knit tie along with things like a tweed jacket and the fabric texture of other day wear items is spot on . I know there is a lot of 80's stigma about the knit tie ( I too wore them in the 80's as well )

If one forgets about the 80's stuff and thinks about the fabric and how it fits in with the other rustic items of Scottish attire , especially daywear , I think it's quite fitting . ( probably go with the pointed tie )

By the way , I have to agree with Ryan Ross , there's something about the headgear in that one picture that seems to compliment the the tie .

    Best Regards , Mike

All this talk about the 80's. You must be a very young lot. I had knitted ties as a boy and I grew up in the 50's and early 60's. I didn't like them very much then because they stretched when making a knot and they had that square cut look at the bottom

Thank you Mr John Cash! I find myself periodically coming into fashion and going back out again simply by remaining exactly the same... anyway I digress.

I love knitted ties both wool and silk and have several of different colours. I love the extra layer of texture it adds to an outfit and I think it goes very well with all the wool, brushed cotton and tweed that makes up a typical highland wardrobe. That isn't to say that I don't like the silk as a contrast as well.

I actually don't think I've ever seen a pointed bottom knitted tie (I have seen and have woollen ties with a pointed bottom but not knitted ties). In any case I happen to like the flat bottom.

I have never had a problem with them stretching and I've had several makes (Gieves & Hawkes, Hiddich & Key, Jaeger and others I can't remember off hand). If you have a properly fitting shirt collar you don't have to tie too tightly to get a good knot: it doesn't have to hold your head on after all!

Eighties? I thought that was the red silk tie with white spots and matching pochette? Perhaps it explains why the entire office hums Aha's "Take On Me" when I'm walking past with my knitted ties!

I really like the look. Especially the small tie kilt pin!
