Knit neck ties?

These are YOUR opinions and you're quite entitled to them but, thankfully, people are allowed to disagree.

1) Why does forgoing the waistcoat help to "make his outfit terrific" (I like waistcoats)?

2) Your opinion (again) is that there's no need for a belt. My opinion is that while a belt is certainly not needed to hold the kilt up, it helps the "look". It always seems to me as if there's something missing if there's no belt.

3) I don't like "simple blanket pins" as kilt pins (as traditional as they are!).

4) I'm not too keen on the brown leather and black shoes, but to each his own.

5) The claret and grey kilt hose seem 'out of place' too. They do not match, bring out, or accenuate any other colour in the outfit.

6) Great jacket, but the 'pocket square' (handkerchief?) is a bit OTT for day wear.

7) I agree with the flashes.

8) Good shoes, but not (for me) black shoes and brown sporran.

9) 'Standard' white shirt (nothing 'terrific').

10) No need for a pin on the tie.

So, the outfit is (imho) OK, but I fail to see where it could be classed as "terrific".

PS. for those interested the day was about 90degrees. We came down from the "bush" 3 hours north of Ottawa from our summer place. Not a day for waistcoats. I rarely wear a belt. I rarely wear that type of shirt with the kilt but it is white because I was burying my father that day. I always travel with a black neck tie, but not always with a white shirt with a funeral appropriate style of collar. And you know what, I ALWAYS wear a handkerchief, ALWAYS. And always white linen when I go to bury my father.

I would indeed make very minor adjustments to Sandy's outfit, should I be wearing a day outfit. We are, surely, quite capable of adding our own variations on a theme, without looking too much different from the basic style and without looking like peas in a pod.

What I would say, is that anyone wanting advice on what to wear if going kilted to a funeral should look no further than this picture for guidance. I can assure everyone that this basic style is quite normal at a Highland funeral. And yes, the tie is perfectly acceptable.

I hope I didn't offend! I have nothing "against" what you were wearing in that photo and I suppose that most people would make some small subtle changes (to suit them) were they to dress for their fathers funeral, but I just failed to see why it was pointed out to be "terrific". Sorry.

I think it is "terrific" because Sandy is one who manages to do all of the following pretty much every time we see him in his kilt:
a) honor Highland dress tradition
b) display his own sense of style
c) make it look effortless!

That, to me, is terrific! An outfit does not have to be jaw-dropping to earn that accolade, in my book.

I'd like to think that honouring Highland dress tradition, displaying your own sense of style and making it look effortless was normal, and in no way terrific. It is what I strive to do each time I kilt up.

Knowing the basics of Highland attire is the foundation of having the confidence to make dress adjustments that our own personal flair demands.

It is something that you, me and others have been banging on about, for many a year.

I regret a lot of things I've expressed on this forum over the years. It would have been better if I had stuck with "that's the way this or that person does things," and left it alone, or began with "I prefer to wear..."

Guess my opinion is that I like the knit tie I have, and I don't even need to have an opinion about your tie.

Went to a thrift store in town today, and found a couple of knit neck ties in pure wool, but both had considerable damage... Guess I'll keep looking.

I know its not really part of the dialog here.... but I noticed the knit ties worn in the movie "Warhorse" by the British Officers... and I thought it had a nice look. I would consider a green one, or even another color...
