    Finally got one!!!!!!

I finally was able to purchase a M.O.D. working brass cantle sporran. My friend Iain Sherwood has been on the lookout for one. He acquired one and now it is mine! I should have it in about 6 days but here are the pictures he sent me. I have wanted a working cantle for quite some time. This one will work out quite well because I can make multiple bags for it. He said the bag was a remake but thats ok with me. The bag looks to be in good shape as well.

I do have a question. Which version is older? The one with 4 interior attachment points on each side or 5.

I think David Pope may have one available for purchase or trade, if I remember correctly.

    Well done Harold!

    Cheers,

Great find! I've been able to purchase a few of those myself over the years, but never one with a bag in that great a condition. Wear it well!

    Congratulations Harold!

Quick question for you- can you tell if yours is coated with a lacquer? Both mine and at least two others I've worked on have been. I'm curious to see if yours is as well.

I checked with David last year and he didn't at that time.

    Hiya Scott,

The reason why I brought David up, was because he had offered to trade one of his MOD brass cantles for one of my Kate Macpherson full-mask sporrans, not too long ago. Naturally, I had to decline such a kind and generous offer - mainly because I prefer wearing traditionally made full-mask sporrans (from native Scottish animals) veruses cantled sporrans, and also because of expense - Kate Macpherson sporrans are quite expensive, and rightly so if one is aware of her process, materials, knowledge and approach.

Anyways, David may still have the MOD cantle in which I speak of, or he may have decided to keep it - I am not sure, but it may be worth a quick PM!

    Cheers,

    Re: Finally got one!!!!!!

Congratulations, Harold, on such a great find! I can't believe what good condition it appears to be in, even if it is a re-bag.

I recently acquired a very similar cantle, though the bag was in much worse condition, being original and stamped "H&S (Lon) LTD 1958" (I believe... Kind of hard to make out, as the ink/dye had bled a bit). Mine also has the four-point snap connection system, which makes me think that what we have is the later, or Mk 2 model (assuming that the date on mine is actually 1958 and not 1953...).

Mine is now in the capable hands of Artificer, awaiting my number to come up for re-bagging, who might weigh in on the date stamp as it's now in his possession.

Can't wait to see what other bags you'll come up with for it!
