    Cheap fast hose tops!

Turned an old sweater into a pair of "new" hose tops by cutting off the sleeves.

Put 'em on with cuff around the ankle, put the flash/garter above the calf, and fold the tops down then tuck back in to the top of the hose.

Put on my boots with regular sock, and then wrap the ankle with my British Army puttees. All set!

    "Action" pics to follow.

Ok, I can kind of follow this, but I would consider sewing the cut end. Another thought is that you could add tops to cheap soccer socks by getting two pair, and cutting the leg part off one pair, then attaching them to the others, or using the leg parts as cuff tops tucked into the tops. Maybe even using a worn out pair for the cuff parts on a good pair.

I think there is a special way to sew stretchy socks, though; stretching them a little as you sew or something like that.
    Good luck.

    Re: Cheap fast hose tops!

Interesting how ingenious we can be when we think about it. Being a high school football official, I have a good selection of high quality "tall" socks. the only drawback is that they are stripped, black and white. After reading an earlier thread this weekend concerning dying of socks, the thought crossed my mind of dying these all black. Of course, just to be onery, I may just wear them as is for a spell.

Also, this afternoon the age old question came up from a lady friend and I was able to answer with, "Why me shoes and socks, of course!" It's been a good day!

I too have thought of do this but How do you sew them togather ?

Do you use elastic thread ?

Do you have any pic's with them on you ?

I would like to make some as well but keep coming to the point of needing
more elasticness in them to fit

    Thank you

I don't have any need to sew them together, really.

    I put on regular socks.

I pull on the former sleeves (now "hose tops"), with the cuff at my ankles. They are now sort of "leg warmers."

Then I put on my ankle boots.

Then wrap short puttees around my ankles, covering the join of the socks and ankle of the boot.

Then put on my flashes. The elastic holds the hose up, just as they were originally intended. (I could sew elastic to the top of the hose, but I like being able to adjust the height.)

Then roll/fold down the excess hose material at the top to fit.

Got a late start this morning and didn't have time to kilt up for work, or I'd post pics.

I cut into the sweater body to remove it, not the sleeve piece. That way the sleeve seam remains intact, preventing any unraveling.

    Oh, ok, I understand now.

I suggest asking Pleater or any of the other knitters on the forum how to sew socks, like attaching a cuff etc, as to the other ends of the discussion.

    Readers;
IF you are really ambitious, there is a pattern on the market(&not in my hand)of how to build a set of socks from a lenght of fabrick. If done this way, you can add a different/designed top to the hose/sock. BUT the sock, even in spandex/cotton material, will need to be tall enough to reach the top of the calf & just below the knee, in order to tye a garter in place, to hold it up(been there, fallen there, as well). The advantage of this, is, of course, that you can make socks in your tartan-with a LOT OF PRACTICE FIRST!
Peg me a PM if you want the pattern & I'll dig it out of storage.
