I started two summers ago by buying a practice chanter at the Highland Games in Brunswick, Maine. They aren't that expensive, I found. Pipes, however, are a different story, but that's another story.
It is a VERY long process, especially when you've got reed problems. Most of my reeds are too stiff and I'm having trouble getting them to play correctly and my base drone is too slack, so I have to use what little supply of hair on my head I have left to make it make noise.
Actually, I'm not that good. I can play Amazing Grace pretty well now, but that's just about it.
