Yes, Meghan, and the lady is even more lovely in real life than in this photo.

I have kilt-waist-length hair, and wear it in a ponytail most times. In the black tie situation, does one leave one's hair in a ponytail or have it braided in some fancy way or what?
A suggestion, Ted. Form your ponytail at the base of your neck, use a silver thread wound several times around, simply bowed and with long silver "tails" in the fall. Can you picture that?

I suppose I can imagine that.
Though I have an uneasy feeling I am missing something.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Considering that the waist is already shorter than the arms, I don't think this one would need to be shortened at all...

This thread got me thinking, would any of you even consider this as part of your formalwear?

On pants, strapping, such as the rayon strap or stripe represents in formal wear, is used to reinforce the seam.
Perhaps a bow or rosette on the kilt instead....

Dark green hose, along with a simple, short tuxedo-like jacket, etc. I might try to work in a bolo tie.
* Velvet kilt might be better in dark blue with dark goldish-green edge stitching the more I think about it, and fewer wider pleats like some of the five yard kilts. The sporran would be a plain, black, smooth leather (not really shiny) with no ornamentation or cantle. Shoes: regular pattent leather pumps or Oxfords.
Can't make up my mind on the color of the edge stitching.
That sounds good for a modern outfit and the overall simplicity would mirror Saxon formal wear nicely. With the sporran, perhaps the plain black leather could be polished as one would polish their shoes? It would help to keep the level of dress high...

Thank you. Shine, but not like the patent leather shoes. I don't want it standing out.

Re: Modern Formal
Actually, the green velvet sporran I brought up in my first post would be best, except with silver embroidery for the cantle area.
And I prefer the scoop neck waistcoats with the "U" shape down the front.
That covers everything except the bolo, if I choose to wear one. I'm still pondering what shape and stone would be right for that.
I think that's full circle, though.

Re: Modern Formal
If I were going to go "modern" I'd mix metaphors, so to speak, and pair up my kilt with a jacket like this, though I'd opt for a regular bow tie and no hat.

For long hair a braid (almost like a low French braid starting about level with your ears - not a true French braid) with the last 2-3 inches wrapped in black satin ribbon and tied off in a knot is very elegant.
