SCD - Turning Point
It seems my request for a change of name for this forum has sparked some renewed interest. To that end, I would like to relate something that happened this last week.
As some of you may know, I took up Scottish Country Dancing last September. The main objective was to be able to wear my kilts on a regular basis.
All the members of the Bury Reel Club welcomed me with open arms and as each week went by, they told me how well I was doing. I did not really believe them. I thought that they were just being kind.
Granted, I never caused a sett to collapse. I always made a point of knowing where I was supposed to end up, so even if I made a total mess of things, I was where I was supposed to be. On the other hand, my footwork is abysmal to say the least.
Most dances are accompanied by "To me, Chas", "Your other left" and "Keep going".
But I persevered and last Wednesday something out of the ordinary happened. The dance announced was Wisp of Thistle. Supposedly, it was the favourite of the late Queen Mother.
As always we have a walk-through first and then dance. This is the crib:
WISP OF THISTLE
(S8x32) 3C (4Cset) P Kent RSCDS Bk 37
1-8 - 1s & 3s Petronella turn into centre & set to partners, dance ½ Reel of 4 in up & down centre of dance
9-16 - 3s & 1s Petronella turn onto own sides & 3s+2s+1s set, 3s+2s+1s turn partners RH to end ready for Allemande
17-24 - 3s+2s+1s dance Allemande
25-32 - 1s cross RH & cast down 1 place, dance ½ Fig of 8 round 2s to end in 2nd place
The thing is, that I just danced it. I was in the right place at the right time doing the right steps and with my partner. No one had to tell me where to go, or what to do next. The dance just flowed and all eight of us enjoyed it. It wasn't just me - all eight of us danced it correctly. No mistakes, no flaws.
What does this mean - I don't know. All I do know is that it was fantastic.
Regards
Chas
