Very thin.
EXTREMELY common at California Ren Faires.....belly dancers and their entourage(s).
Right. In Elizabethan England, there were troupes of roaming belly dancers.
Whatever. They're having fun and they're not hurting anybody.

Yup. Been like this for a long time. It is more a Fantasy faire than a Renaissance faire. People will show up in anything weird, outlandish, odd, risque, or otherwise abnormal. I've seen people in Stormtrooper outfits, Smurf costumes, people dressed like pumpkins, "furries", and everything else you could imagine.
In one sense, it's disappointing that people can't stick to the theme of the event. It would be really cool to have an "authentic" experience where there is some effort put into the historical aspect. But on the other hand, it's very entertaining to see what people come up with. The "anything goes" attitude there is quite refreshing when compared to everyday hum-drum life.

Lots of this at TRF too. There's even a Greek village area where belly dancing happens all day long. I really admire the women who have the stamina to do it for that long.
Plus several of the musical acts (like Zardoz's favourite, Circa Paleo) have belly dancers as part of the act. I spend way more time watching the belly dancers than I should...

Re: Ren Faire Kilted Wench
I'm with Tobus, as much as I enjoy seeing some of the very elaborate period (and sometimes fantasy) garb, at faire or at Dickens fest, I find myself wondering about stuff like how heavy it is or can they sit down? etc...

I love my friend Elizabeth's Elizabeth I with sword and breastplate, but I know she can't get into the privy or even sit down in it.

Re: Ren Faire Kilted Wench
Okay...this is how mnd mind works...
Elsewhere there's a thread about the 13th Century....I remember a scene from the ORIGINAL Rollerball movie where Jonathan E goes to Geneva, Switzerland where all of the world's history has been preserved in computers and the technician makes a mistake and erases all the records pertaining to the 13th Century....it's gone...poof! All the technician can say is, "oh well...that's too bad."
So we need to make a movie (with an all star cast of Xmarksers) about a world in the distant future that finally perfects time travel and decides to send a party back to the 13th Century except all of the records were accidentally deleted....so they fall back on what they confidently feel is an accurate record of the 13th Century as recreated by the serious historians of the 20th and 21st Centuries: Ren Faires. Thus educated to the customs, manner of dress and speech of the 13th Century as learned by viewing videos of Ren Faires, the intrepid time travelers go back to study the past.
