    Help me move?

    Hi xmarks family!

I'm moving. Well, I'm planning on moving.... and I don't know where.

Long story short, there is nothing keeping my wife and me here in upstate NY, and we'd like to be far, far away from our families.

We have no distance restrictions, and the only geographical limitation is "not in the South" because neither of us deal well with hot weather.

We have two dogs- a black lab and a shepherd/st. bernard mix, so housing is always trouble.... we'll be renting.

We are both college-educated (BA) and have management experience. She's in public administration and I'm in security/investigations, but we're both willing to shift careers a little bit.

I'm thinking Maine, since we like the coast, but I'm looking for suggestions. Where do you live, and why should I live there, too?

    Thanks!

The mountains of East TN and Western NC...we don't get the opressive heat and humidity the rest of the South is prone to, you get all the other bonuses that come with living in the South, and to top it all off the STM is close by!

I'm just south of Atlanta, you would fit right in since Atlanta ain't fit for a native southerner. Seriously, in Atlanta everyone is from somewhere else.

How sad wanting to be away from your families, such is life I suppose, but what an opportunity! How about thinking right out of the box? Ireland? Scotland? Europe somewhere? Southern South America? New Zealand? I have no idea really, but good luck to you both.

It's a shame it took us this long to realize it was time. My mother is a psychotic, over involved zealot and my father in law is a destructive alcoholic.

    Ugh.

Jock- we would love to move to the UK. My sister married a Scot and lives in Glasgow and it's just beautiful. I think the biggest obstacle is immigration/work visa nonsense. I'm not a MD PhD PhD PhD, Esq. unfortunately, and not independently wealthy.

    My thoughts too.
I was going to suggest Scotland to you and then I realised you were currently resident in the USA.
My partner moved to Scotland from Germany which is much easier since as an EU Citizen she has an automatic right of residence here.
However, since your sister is already resident in Scotland perhaps it is worth your while applying to join her here.

Come up to Maine. Life in the slow lane.....
If you don't mind mud and mosquitos. Portland is a nice small city. The farther North the towns get spread out. Augusta is the capital and has alot of law enforcement, hospitals and colleges. It seems older people hate the ice and go to Florida and rent their houses out.

I love Maine. I vacationed in York as a kid, and loved every second of it. Ogunquit is so nice, too. I've dropped applications in about 15 states so far... lol. We'll see.

I think either Oregon or Washington State would be just what you are looking for. The weather is not too different and the scenery is beautiful.
