Joseph &tc Ref.Help Me Move
When considering Maine, bear in Mind the cost of living up here, the worst in New England. I drive a hour to New Hampshire to buy the monthly chow, it still costs less with the price of gas.
Beware of Ogunquit, it is a summer town largely filled with men who WILL think your kilt is a skirt! And its part of Maines' "Gold Coast", you need to be a Madoff type to buy anything there.
And yes, I live here, and still like it; after all, my forebears settled, founded and created, a goodly part of the States History. Most of them were fleeing English Despotism
, as in the Mayflower types, some were looking for a "Brave New World", but here is where they came-must be a good reason!? If you do move here, peg me a PM & we can have a 2 man kilt night.

Too bad you don't do well with hot weather. The job market here in the Washington DC area for management types, expecially with any kind of security background, is very brisk.
Just remember. Friends will help you move. Real friends will help you move bodies!

I completely understand your motivation to move. My wife and I were once in a similar situation, and moving 300 miles away improved the situation quite a bit. Moving won't make the problems disappear, but they are less troublesome when they are not so close by. I wish you the best of luck!

I've lived in upstate New York just short of half a century and I'd feel out of place anywhere else. Join us for a kilt night before you go, and best wishes wherever you land.

May I suggest Canada. Specifically southern Ontario. I'm not sure about visa, etc., but once you cross the border even from upper NY you are a long way from where you were and into a whole different culture.
Check my Lat & Long. It is beautiful here.

I'm not from there, nor do I have any connections there, but I hear the oil industry is booming in North Dakota. And with that boom comes all kinds of other needs. I would imagine that the cost of living is less than it would be in Maine or New York. However it is further north than your current position. You mentioned no tolerance for heat, but you didn't mention the cold.

Portsmouth N.H. is a GREAT small city (large town) right on the coast but only a stones throw from the beautiful White Mountains. And there are several highland games withing striking distance if that matters, including the New Hampshire Highland Games one of the best on the east coast. Maine is right across the river and Boston not too far away for a day trip (train service available as well).
No income tax, the cheapest gas in New England and the New Hampshire economy is recovering faster than the rest of the northeast. Worth a look if this is the kind of area you have in mind.

Well here's my 2p
On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being moveing to Poland in the late 30s)
I was raised in southern Cali and started collage there in the LA basin=5
work is ok but it's so LA
Collage and lived for 10+ yrs in central Cali,Monterey/San jose/South San francisco=8
Loved Monterey but work could be better unless you like bar/restaurant mgt.And it's on the water
San Jose,South SF good work but the rent is of note and It's city life for the dogs.
Worked in the central valley of California for 7yrs=1
Do not go there.Warsaw in 39 was a better place to live,NO work, the summer is stupid hot and it was voted 3rd worst place to live in the U.S.DO NOT MOVE THERE.But the rent is cheap.
Northern Wisconsin=7
Work can be hard, winter is not for the faint of heart, but housing is cheap, the people are great for the most part and late spring, summer and fall( before the mud) is like heaven with mosquitos(lots of mosquitos) but nothing's perfect.
That's my 2p

Thanks for the info guys! I'm focusing in on the north east, I think. NH seems like a great place, especially with no income tax!
I've applied for a few jobs in Portland, ME, Portsmouth NH, and North Conway, NH. I'd like to get out of security because it's stressful and the hours are stupid. I hav a degree in wilderness recreation and lots of outdoor experience (professionally an personally) and I'm shooting for a whitewater guide license in April and May... We'll see.
I looked into Canada, considering the excellent outdoor opportunities, but I would need a solid job offer from a company willing to sponsor a visa... And I don't think I'm that desirable.

I highly recommend Portland Oregon or anywhere else in the Pacific Northwest for that mater. I just love the rain and trees and natural beauty here and we're only a short drive from the coast.
Below is a link to a very nice youtube video tour of Portland Oregon so you can get a feel for us. Enjoy!
