Yes, but they also come in other colours. I have seen all sorts whilst traveling in Bavaria (southern Germany, specifically in Munich, Bischofswiesen, Hallein, Berchtesgaden and Garmisch-Partenkirchen - my favourite region of Deutschland, bar-none!). The attire of the Bavarian man (see an example below) in all its tradition and romantic alpine glory, is somewhat similar to that of traditional Highland dress - lots wool, stag horn buttons, melton, tweed, hose, garters, ornate hats, leather, solid and check shirts, brooches, decorative accents, ornateness, etc.

    Prost!

All true, but it's a rare woman (non-German, anyway) that feels about lederhosen like many women feel about the kilt.

Really......I have never gotten that reaction, I will have to wear them more often. Once every couple years must not be enough, lol

    Sure!

It is in my opinion that traditional Bavarian and Austrian dress as the same 'rustic' and 'alpine/Highland' feel as traditional Scottish Highland day attire, with several distinct and rather obvious differences.

    Here you are:

And I wonder how many bavarians have ever gotten "lederhosen-checked"?

I actually saw these feathered pins a while back and thought they looked interesting but just a tad effeminate for a kilt pin, although now I think they might not be bad in lieu of a metal cap badge.

Love all the boiled wool in the Bavarian dress style.

Hmm, that is an interesting option. It would be neat especially if you were of bavarian decent as well.

at least one of my family branches leads to Germans in Pennsylvania. It's real shakey and murky trying to probe back that far, though; , I don't have the resources to figure out what regions their ancestors left 17/18 C.
I think I might look into what they might have worn in Pennsylvania; that sounds kind of neat.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…
