Two Books from the 80's
A dragon boat team mate handed me two books from her bookshelf. Land of the Scots: A short History by Caroline Bingham and Robert Bain's The Clans and Tartans of Scotland. A great little reference the latter will be. the nice bonus is that they still have dot matrix receipts and photocopies of newspaper clippings within the leaves. A nice trip back in time.
Is anyone familiar with these books?

I don't know Land of the Scots, Xavier, but I have a 3rd edition copy of Bain's book edited by Margaret O. Macdougall and published by Collins in 1938. I'll leave it to our tartan experts to comment on the accuracy of the 100 or so tartans included. I think they're pretty good from a print quality perspective. Please take the accompanying verbiage with a large dose of salts, however, because it's just a rehash of poorly-researched clan dribble of the 19C. In some cases Bain didn't even bother to re-write and just copied verbatum.
