    Air Purifying Kilts

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotlan...-fife-17613623

Special clothing which cleans the air around the person wearing them has been unveiled at a science festival in Edinburgh.

Catalytic Clothing, in the form of air-purifying jeans and kilts, are on display as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

The clothes are treated with titanium dioxide which acts as a catalyst, which cleans the air.

Air pollution is neutralised by the clothes as the person walks.

With the help of sunlight, the catalysts neutralise the dirt from the air pollution around the person.

The clothes could be launched on the market in 2013.

Artist and designer Professor Helen Storey, from the London College of Fashion, and polymer chemist, Professor Tony Ryan, from the University of Sheffield, are behind the project.

The technology is already used in concrete and the surface of buildings to help keep then smog and pollution free.

The Edinburgh International Science Festival runs until Sunday 15 April.

For the benefit of those unable to view the link, the illustration shows a lady wearing a long dress and a gentleman wearing a black kilt, black sweater and grey cap. There is also a tartan kilt on a hangar positioned between the man and woman.

And just how long is this titanium infusion supposed to stay on the clothing? Or on the buildings? How many rainy winters or dry cleaning cycles?

I don't know if it ever made it to production, but I remember reading years ago about work that Ford (?) was doing on a pollution-fighting coating for auto radiators. As air passed over the surface, the coating caused a catalytic reaction that eliminated a specific type of pollutant. This fabric sounds like an application of that same idea.

Of course, the way my mind works, I instantly connected this thread's title to this post by tundramanq, briefly immortalized in ryan ross's signature line. . .
