Sharp eye to spot the whip, Jock! Can't say I wear the kilt too often beagling, but sometimes it's the perfect choice! When I was an "active Whipper-In" I always wore livery; now that I am just hon. I take liberties with the dress!

In response to your most recent post (I, likewise, have yet how to make the quote function work...), I thought of exactly that- ("What those men need is a neat bourbon or a PBR in a bottle to carry around!"), but I hesitated to suggest it since all the Highland Games around here are "officially" dry.

This is what happens when Presbyterian and Episcopalian emigrants live among Baptists for too many generations.
I never really understood this, but then again I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, where there are no "dry" Scottish events (or any other type of event for that matter). I understand there are "dry" counties in various U.S. States, mainly in the southern part of the country, correct?

My first encounter with an "officially" dry Highland Games was in Batesville, Arkansas when I tagged along with my mate and piper, Matt Pantaleoni when he was the Pipe Major of the St. Louis Caledonian Pipe Band. We made do by enjoying a wee dram or two back at the hotel. My second encounter with an "officially" dry Scottish event was at the Kentucky Scottish Weekend; however, myself, my wife, and Sandy made do by having a few proper pints over quite a pleasant chat near our car in the parking lot!

    Cheers,

Since last year's Kentucky Scottish Weekend, General Butler State Resort Park (where the event takes place) became one of 5 Kentucky state parks to obtain a liquor license. I have not heard whether or not that will have any effect on the availability of alcohol at the Games, though. If it isn't in the works, it should be.

    Best

i love almost everything AA says.

but to get back on topic, i love the pics of the clan macpherson chiefs for demonstrating their (as jock scot put it) own flair and using blended matching colors (as opposed to solids in the us). the various clan chiefs look very much at home in their attire. they stand out yet fit in.

for my job, i have to be somewhat formal. i will wear a boring corporate grey suit and blah tie when absolutely necessary, but i more often wear suits that look out of place in a funeral parlor and much more often wear slacks and sport coats to express my personal flair as much as possible while still being appropriate for the setting/event. it is good to stand out from the herd while being recognized as part of the herd.

when not at work--as others have said, wear what would be appropriate ... just substitute the kilt for pants. most people i have found will give you a "bonus letter grade" for wearing a kilt and seem to think you are "extra" dressed up, and you do not need to add extra do dads-unless you want to add your own extra flair.

    Yes!

That tends to give the impression that, as with a fine stud bull, it's YOUR herd.

You look great Tobus. The spats, sporran style, beard, and stoic facial expression, all give a slightly more historical feel. I don't think this is "too traditional" because those touches push your look into an entirely different direction, without being over done. The lack of a jacket also tones it down a bit. Add a dirk, daywear doublet, and/or Glengarry hat and we might have to reconsider
