There are some in Scotland who are very knowledgeable about these things, one at least,is a member here, who take a very dim view of this "Pocket Laird-ship" thing. Some are out and out scams and some are rather more honest in their intentions.

However, I personally, take them to be on the whole fairly harmless, if tongue in cheek, fun. Make no mistake though, others take a far more serious view on the matter. To be fair, few of the new " pocket lairds" ever take the thing seriously and just enjoy it for what it is. Sadly, I have met in passing a couple of " pocket lairds" that have taken the whole thing way beyond common sense and on both occasions they have left with local derision ringing in their ears.

The Land Registry (albeit for England & Wales but I don't think you need delve into the respective legal systems too deeply!) have a good general public guide which sets out the general position fairly clearly:

    There is a vast amount I could and would wish to say about this, but I will restrict myself to this;

    This is their contact address:

    Highland Titles
    York House
    Victoria Street
    Alderney, Channel Islands
    GY9 3TA

Which is a totally different and separate legal jurisdiction outside of Scotland.

Why don't they have an address in Scotland?

    Regards

    Chas

Really...does anyone actually take this seriously? It's a fund raiser and, as Big Mikey pointed out, should be checked out for legitimacy but is just a bit of fun.

I mentioned the Sgt. Preston Yukon giveaway, here's a link to an article on the particulars:

    http://www.yukoninfo.com/klondikebiginch.htm

....so it's a sort of honorary ownership, not the real thing. Interesting that they do offer fishing "rights" to the purchasers...I suppose that they figger they'll make even more money off you as a tourist if you should happen to show up but that's all right, too.

Last time one of these promotions got kicked around on the forum, it was pointed out that it would be in poor taste for one to have business cards printed proclaiming himself the "Laird of Whatever" but other than that, it was just a gag.

    Lighten up, people....

I know many from outwith the UK in general and outwith Scotland in particular may make light of all this and I have made my position clear on this matter.I also accept that on the whole no disrespect is intended in any way. However, it would be unwise to under-estimate the depth of feeling that some here have on this matter.

Is it actually legal to refer to yourself as a 'laird' just because you own land in Scotland?
Doesn't that mean there would be millions of Lairds here?

Lord Biblemonkey! I can issue edicts and decrees to my wife then! And then sit back and await the inevitable overthrow of my government when she smacks me back into reality.

If you own the land freehold and it is recorded as such in the Land Registry, then yes, you would be the laird of 37 Acacia Avenue or wherever and you could call yourself such. Not Laird Blackrose, but the laird of whatever address.

    Subtle difference.

    Regards

    Chas
