As others have mentioned, the path of least resistance is to be content that your wife is OK with the kilt and wear it in a way that pleases her. Then try to gradually introduce her to other looks

If she doesn't like colours outside of what your kilt has, then Black Watch is going to be pretty limiting. This is an excuse to get a kilt in another tartan... how about Royal Stuart? That has a ton of different colours in the little stripes.

As for mixing patterns, try something subtle first. A light herringbone on your shirt, for example, would barely be noticeable. It can also soften the visual impact of mixing patterns if you use a waistcoat to break up your tartan from your shirt.

Thanks for the input. I don't want everyone to think my wife is a total fashion nazi. I am very luck to have her and am happy to please her. As for patterns she is OK with a herringbone tweed jacket or tweed with a light over check (neither of us like the window pane tweeds) and texturing patterns like cable knits are fine, so I'm done on the pattern issue. With my four tartan kilts I have a nice varity: Heritage of Ireland, MacDonald of Clanranald, Black Watch & Xmarks. I would like to add some lovat blue and lovat green hose to my wardrobe and she asked what I would wear them with. I may try to sneak in some different colors with flashes and see how that goes over. I just ordered the flash sets Jeff suggested in the latest hose color thread, looks like a great value for the varity.
