As others have mentioned, the path of least resistance is to be content that your wife is OK with the kilt and wear it in a way that pleases her. Then try to gradually introduce her to other looks
If she doesn't like colours outside of what your kilt has, then Black Watch is going to be pretty limiting. This is an excuse to get a kilt in another tartan... how about Royal Stuart? That has a ton of different colours in the little stripes.
As for mixing patterns, try something subtle first. A light herringbone on your shirt, for example, would barely be noticeable. It can also soften the visual impact of mixing patterns if you use a waistcoat to break up your tartan from your shirt.
