Day number three of me playing my small pipes in downtown Vancouver. There is one downtown location were no busking permit is required - thus I do not think I am breaking the ban. The City will not issue a busking permit for pipers. I am playing were no permit is required ;).

The only time I interacted with a police officer is when he walked by, smiled and gave me the thumbs up. The VDP are proud of their pipe band and my gut feeling is that it will not be enforced. The Mayor has said that he will review the ban (he often wears a kilt to formal occasions)

It should be interesting this weekend as the SFU Pipe Band is playing a fundraising concert this weekend in the heart of downtown.

Well said !!! Vancover's dept of engineering is banning it due to " noise concerns " ?? The dept of engineering and noise concerns ???

Well if noise is the concern , then they better ban any of their new construction projects , street repair , etc that may be going on .

It would seem the only real " noise " may be the sound of their own voices .

In situations like this , one should apply a scientific solution :

" The Two Part Principle of Logic "

Part one : Always apply common sense

Part two : Always refer to part one

WOOF!!I'm not a player of any public play instrument, yet these times seem to be driving some to new widths and horizons. Perhaps if I were a fella inclined to busking, I'd likely get a rather noisy bang box with good batteries. Simply stand in the ordinary way with Bagpipes in hand - only silent and without air in bag. The recorded Bagpipe music playing on the bang box would not be loud enough to be a noise hazard if played at a properly moderated volume. Passersby would likely be most pleasingly entertained and understanding while possibly continuing the encouragement with occasional donations as they read the brief sign explaining that the Music is legal, but the actual live performance on Bagpipes has been banned. Does the new rule include PC's? arf!!

Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

I don't know. I worked for a short time in the Starbucks on the Royal Mile, and the bagpipers did get quite annoying after a while.
If they were right outside it was almost deafening.
