Most folks buy a bonnet because they like the color, and it may go with their kilt or with their accessories like a jacket or hose, or it may not "go" with anything in particular. I think the only particularly peculiar colors are claret and forest green, as you do not often see those in Balmorals outside of the armed forces. Other things that can make a bonnet a bit of a flasher is if the dicing is significantly contrasting to the crown color, unless you are talking red dicing with a black or blue crown which look fine. Most other diced bonnets have a white/cream and self colored dicing which looks grand. Really, aside from those couple tendencies (by no means rules---heck I break those regulalry myself) pick a color you like for whatever reasons you choose. Although you can do a lot of matchy matchy with bonnets and other parts of your attire that is purely a choice of the wearer. You do not sound too interested in matchy matchy though.

Think a Lovat green would do very well but you would have to ensure that you get a lighter shade

I like that idea of Ryan matching a yarn to your tartan, but the brown Ryan Ross looks pretty dang close to me.

Goodness gracious me! Try to match your bonnet colour to you kilt and/or attire? Never heard of such an idea. Just pick a bonnet of a style and colour of your choice , stick it on your head and just get on with life!

Get a color that matches your eyes and enhances the effect of the RR pose.
