Wasn't there a kilted drinking club at Sewanee?

With all due respect, David, it is a small minority of men wearing jackets and ties at Carolina games unless things have changed drastically since the late 80s. And among them even, there is little else one ought to emulate, the large majority of them being drunken fratty baggers.

If I am understanding Kenneth's point, he is commenting on the general lowering of formality in today's society. There are of course places where people maintain more traditional standards and/or people who prefer to dress up a bit more. The problem is trying to fit a square peg into a round hole by wearing a kilt at a traditional level of formality when the contemporary context will make said level of dress look at best affected, and at worst like a costume.

I think this is less of a concern if one is at a specifically Scottish event or a special occasion where people are getting dressed up. But many of our members like to wear the kilt for everyday events and it is easy to look too traditional when there is no traditional or dress code context for dressing up. This issue is also probably a more important consideration outside Scotland, but I've also heard that there are some parts of Glasgow (maybe other cities too?) where being seen as "putting on airs" could get a person in real trouble

Perhaps it was just the folks that I hung out with. That was the mid-90s and we were in the old bleachers before they built the huge new fieldhouse. I attended last year's Clemson /UNC game at Clemson similarly dressed, though, and didn't feel out of place. What would you wear to a UNC football game?

Your vitriol emboldens me to ask, though, "Were you in a fraternity yourself?"

Early in the season? A collared shirt and a pair of khakis. Mid-season? A collared shirt, khakis, and a tweed jacket or sweater. Late season? A collared shirt, khakis, a sweater, and my Coast Guard surplus pea coat. But I'm 44 years old now. I don't remember what I wore back in the day, but it was likely more casual and undoubtedly blue jeans. But then I was much more concerned with who was at the Cat's Cradle than the football game anyway.

Negative. But you knew that already. Apologies to those who were.

Now, we've probably taken enough of a detour. Thanks, Colin, for getting it back on track.

The Old Cradle...Yeah. Saw a band called Metal Flake Mother there before it moved down to Carrboro.

Yeah, I figured you for a GDI.

I guess if a fellow wears the kilt day in and day out he'd be hard pressed to dress traditionally. Perhaps that's where the scrunched-down socks, hiking boots, t-shirt, and leather jacket (a la Duncan from MOTG) kicks in.

As I understand it, though, the traditional method of wearing a kilt is NOT to wear it day in and day out. So perhaps this really isn't a issue that traditional kilt wearers face?

I have no idea, MacLowlife, I was trying to quote CMcG's post.
However, it bothers me that Cajunscot has stopped posting on the forum. The people with whom I interact keep leaving the forum, and I'm on many ignore lists…

CMcG's point struck a nerve… There have been times I have worried about wearing a kilt in my neighborhood…

Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…
