Of course. I just felt that as a matter of politeness, rather than mere legality, I would avoid "stepping on someone's toes" as it were. Since I have used those arms as an avatar on a very active public forum for more than ten years, I am confident that there is no conflict with any well-known arms, which was my intent. I have been very much surprised that there were no real parallels.

I do plan on registering them with the American College at some point, and I am working now on a new rendering (not exactly a complicated design...) I find that I have been finding uses for the CoA that parallel medieval uses for arms or badges - essentially a mark that says "this is mine" while still being decorative. I have not yet gone so far as to have a silver service engraved... yet...

I really have to thank all of you for your input in this thread. While I have studied heraldry extensively in the past, I had put it aside for a while; now I am going forward with this, and hope to have a successful registration complete soon.

Now, what to do for a crest...

    Cheers!

    Phil

    Hi, Phil –
your choice of design is elegantly simple. If it proves to be unique in your region, it should be fine.
However, adding supporters is a big no-no, as this is reserved for the aristocracy, or for very large corporations (such as city councils).
    Regards,
    Mike

    Thanks, Mike.

I am a large corporation, it seems No, seriously - I don't think I would do that, after all. I still need a crest, and a motto, though. I think an arm holding a trident (Naval Service) might work for the crest. I have been trying to find the translation for "Run and find out" as a motto.

    Cheers!

    Phil,

If you don't mind me asking, what did you do in the Navy. (I come from a Navy Air Force Family and joined the Army...go figure.)

Also how were you thinking about expressing the Run and find out? Latin, Gaelic.....

PS...I am new at heraldry and have been developing a keen interest in it. The guys on here have REALLY given me an education. So, pardon my questions they are a matter of curiosity ..

Oh, no problem at all! I see you are in Monterey, so you are in my old Navy stomping grounds - I went through DLI twice, Basic Russian and Advanced Arabic. I wish I could go back for a visit.

I was working on the Latin for "Run and Find Out" - yes, it is the Kipling quote from Rikki-Tikki-Tavi - because my curiosity has always been a driving force in my life. With twenty years in the Navy in Intel work, I think that motto would be fitting.

    Cheers!

I figured ONI but I didn't want to assume. I think the Motto is very appropriate... If you were a fan of Norse Mythology you could go with Ravens on the Trident, reminiscent of Odin's Ravens who brought him intelligence everyday.. Forgive the quick artwork in paint and power point.

Yours is very close to what I had so far:

I like the idea of Hugin and Munin, but I am still working on it. But yes, at this point it is down to crest and motto; I could even skip the motto for now.

    Dunno.

    Cheers!

I liked Hugin and Munin as well and almost incorporated them into my arms....up until the last moment. Good luck. Let us know when you decide so we can see what your final product is.

Side note: What program are you using to create your arms?

I just worked that up from the template that Cygnus graciously linked in the first post - https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4N9yTY8IriiMDc0YjM3YmMtYjlkOC00MmNiLThjMDUtYzhmM mU2ODcyNWJj/edit?pli=1 . I used Paint, then saved it to Fotobucket. Fiddly, but I got it done.

In one version of my arms I included an orle of seven magpies. From the old rhyme "one for sorrow..." I thought that one fit very well with my service.

    Cheers!

Phil E Begg - Not to be nick picky, but the twisted torso wreath above the helm is of six twists starting with the main metal, then main color. If one uses a fur such as ermine the color used is white not an ermine spot. Just FYI.
