Thanks!
This is just as the template came, with five twists. I should probably have started with Or, but I actually started with the middle twist. By the time I thought about it, I would have had to go back and redo all of them... this was supposed to just be a quick sketch, not a final rendering. I am certainly no artist.

I made that template and made the twists in the wreath a bit too big, and out of laziness never remedied that.
Perhaps I should update the template...

MS Paint - as basic a program as you can get. I'm not skilled enough to use anything fancier.

Hi, Phil –
remember that a crest needs to be fairly compact. If you go for the idea of a trident and a pair of ravens, you need the birds to be somewhat bigger.
I rather liked your idea of an orle of ravens, which could be just what you need to make your shield unique.
Keep up the good work.
Regards,
Mike

Yeah - I think I will stick with the idea for an arm with trident, such as in the arms of the Isle of Ely County Council or of John Holmes. As far as the orle goes - it was seven magpies, to go with the nursery rhyme ending "...Seven for a Secret, never to be told". And of course when I tried it out, they had to be on a bordure for clarity (mostly black birds on a black field is a non-starter) and when the bordure was large enough for the birds to be clearly identifiable, it impinged far too much on the main charge.
So the shield will stay as it is, I have a good idea of what to do for a crest, and I am still working on a motto. I could use a fieldless orle of magpies as a badge, I suppose...
Thanks!
Phil

Awesome. As many on here will tell you....you gotta go with what YOU like. I can't wait to see the finished product.

I fixed the template linked to in the first post to include a torse with six twists rather than the five it had originally.

My assumed arms:
Coat of Arms:Gules a fess bretessed between in chief three escutcheons and in base a harp of six strings or,
Crest:Upon a wreath or and gules a dexter arm embowed vested azure the hand in a buckskin gauntlet grasping a cavalry saber proper, upon a great helm,
Mantled gules doubled argent
Motto: Riamh Nar Dhruid O Spairn Lann
The gules coloring and embattlements of the bretessed fess refer my service as a US Army Officer, the three escutcheons to my post-military career in law enforcement and the three agencies in which I have served, the harp to my Irish ancestory. The crest is a reference to my Great-Great-Grandfather's (the first of my ancestors to immigrate to the US) service during the Civil War in the 6th US Cavalry as well as my own service in the 7th US Cavalry, which was my regimental affiliation for 22 years. The motto ties together my military background, my Irish ancestory and my basic philosophy. It comes from the Civil War era flag of the 69th New York of the famed Irish Brigade, which was commanded by another ancestor, Robert Nugent, and translates to: "Who Never Retreats From the Clash of Spears".
I'm currently considering the various options to register these arms.

Very nice Scout, love the symbolism. Two suggestions, on the sabre add that the "grasping a cavalry sabre bend sinister hilt or and blade proper (may not be the correct order of wording)." And perhaps the fess be argent, allusion to the cavalry banner of gules & argent, or not.
