Since the title asked about today, I'll have to go with Chessmen of Mars. It's the 5th installment in the E.R. Burroughs John Carter series. Downloaded the series to my Kindle prior to seeing the movie, although I do have most of them in paperback.
However, I also am awating the next book by Katherine Kurtz in the Adept series, or Deryni series. I'm also reading Laurell K. Hamilton, Saberhagen, and Robert Asprin. I may complete my collection of R.A.Wilson or go off on some there tangent. I love to read and read teh autobiography of Tesla before the last venture.

I am reading Tricked: The Iron Druid Chronicles. Book 4 of a series about a 2000 year old celtic druid and his dog. Lots of action and humor. Its a pretty good read......mostly brain fodder for the masses.

There were kilts mentioned in some of these books.
Ok, I finished reading the book. Some of the things about Rogers made me think of Dale Seago; not everything, though. 
Highland soldiers were mentioned a couple of times, but I don't think there was any discussion of kilts, though trews did come up: the Forty-Second I think.
"Rogers's Rules of Ranging" are reprinted in the back of the book along with several other things. I'm not qualified to say whether it was historically well written, but it was a very interesting read, and I enjoyed the book.
