Renaming a link
When using the "insert link" function, memory says the pasted results used to come up with highlighting already applied between the brackets, making it easy to replace the text that will appear in the post. For example, instead of a huge URL appearing as your link, you could simply type "LINK" or the like and that's what would appear in your post.
Now, the pasted results appear with your cursor at the very end. To replace the URL with some descriptive text, you have to go back and manually replace it inside the brackets.
Not a big deal but the old way made it easier to create "more friendly" link text.

Sydnie,
There is an easy way to do it. First type the word or phrase that you want to be the clickable link, e.g., if I wanted to link to Google, I would type Google!
Then, highlight that word or words before you click the insert link button. Now, click Insert Link, and give it the URL for the link and click OK. That will make the words you highlighted a link. Like here: Google

Sydnie, I'm not really sure what you are describing here.
I never used to use the link stuff 'cause I'm not a 'puter geek so didn't understand it. I don't really remember how it worked before but our new forum makes it real easy even for me.
If, for example,
Let's say I want to direct a member to our forum rules. I don't want to put a long string of text that is the actual link location, but want them to be able to just click on some descriptive text.
i.e. To go directly to the forum rules, click here.
First I find and copy the the place I want them to go. In this case I would scroll to the top of the page and right click the "forum rules" tab. This opens a small window with choices, I click "copy link location". This stores the link.
I then scroll back to my text and highlight the text where I want to insert the link. In this case I would left click and drag a highlight over the words "click here".
The final step is to find the small "insert link" icon at the top of the box where I am entering test. The icon to insert a link looks like a globe with a chain link on it. I click that globe.
A new window opens with an address bar. I right click in that bar and paste my link.
Then I hit OK.
The link is inserted at the highlighted text.
Here is what my descriptive text with the link inserted looks like in my post.
To go directly to the forum rules, click here.
Sydnie, Is this what you are trying to describe?

OK, I always did it the other way 'round. I'd copy the URL I wanted to link to, click "insert link" and paste in that URL, then click OK. Some forums give you a second pop-up to type in the link text that you want to have appear, but IIRC XMarks used to provide the highlighting that I tried to describe -- so that after pasting in your link, you could just start typing and it would replace the long URL/link text with what you were typing.
But you are describing doing it the other way 'round, creating your desired link text first and then pasting in the link. If I can remember to do it that way (HAH!) I'll give it a shot.
Thanks!
