Perhaps that the sett is asymmetric or that the piece was woven without enough cloth to match better. Herringbone edge puts it with the possibility of being an 18th century piece if I'm remembering my dates well. Interesting hemming. Shows the original brilliance of the colours. Looks big enough to be a belted plaid. Dimensions?

    No, it's symmetrical.

    ?? It does match!

    A reasonable assumption.

    27" wide per single piece x 9' x 2.

Could well be a belted plaid at those dimensions.

The only other reason I can think of to sew the two halves together with contrasting twill directions is if one side is meant to be worn turned over revealing what would be the inside of the other half.

I was teasing a little to see if I could get you to work through the dimensions. What size is the piece?

I think you are over analysing the construction. I've made several joined plaids and I've never given the twill direction a second thought. That said, a majority of the old ones that I've examined have the twill continuing in the same direction which means that the length was cut in half and one piece rotated by 180 degrees then joined. If however one piece is laid on top of the other and simply whip stitched then when spread out the twill will run in opposite directions. I suspect it was nothing more than personal preference and practicality of sewing space, possibly with a modicum of luck, that dictated why way was chosen.

Other than what I have said already, 20" sett size or thereabouts, hemmed.

That sounds 54" x 3 yards to me.

I interpreted the "x 2" to refer to the 27" width doubled to make 54". Are there two identical pieces? Is there one 6 yards?
