    Buckle Brogues

Are buckle brogues just for black tie or can they be worn other times of day and with other levels of formality?

I suppose that depends on whether you're talking about the modern "Mary Jane" type or a more historical shoe. The former I would say undoubtedly for formal wear; the latter were at one time simply shoes.

Kenneth, good point. Yes, I had seen a picture of the "Mary Jane" style buckle brogues, and I thought they were smart. I wasn't sure if one might wear them smart casual evening--shirt and tie.

Generally speaking, most gentlemen relegate the buckled shoes to formal evening wear, and stick with well-polished oxfords or wing tips on other occasions. For outdoor, day wear, any well polished shoe is appropriate, as are ghillie brogues which are most often worn by members of pipe bands.
