So would it be safe to say he's wearing Black Watch in the photo or am i way off the mark?

Very interesting.
The title thread leapt out at me as a must read as I attended the funeral of Captain Robert Cuninghame of Caprington in February of this year, who served in the Royal Scots Greys.
Given that the spelling of Cuninghame is the same and that both were army captains I wondered whether the gentleman in your illustration was from the Caprington branch of the family. It is a possibility indeed, though I had not heard of an Isle of Man connection previously. The Cunninghams originated in Ayrshire though many went to Ireland as settlers during the late sixteen hundreds, hence the small towns of Newtowncunningham and Manorcunningham in Ireland. Isle of Man may have been a stopping off point on the way from Scotland to Ireland in the days of sail powered ships.

For the record, I was never suggesting that it was a teepee or that he was sitting on buffalo robes. I just thought it was interesting that it looked that way to my American-centric eye. Of course it wouldn't be either of those things since the Black Watch was long gone from these shores at that point. Just felt the need to make that clear (feeling overly sensitive this afternoon).

Wow, what a remarkable photo of I'm sure, an equally remarkable man. I too am an enlisted Marine (a former NCO), Semper Fidelis!
Thanks for sharing.

I've learned more about the photographer if not the subject. Look here, Library of Congress site.

Heehehehe... I never assumed anything other than you state Kenneth and can see the similarity myself, even without an American eye. Apologies if I sounded brusque, that wasn't my intention. I was just in a bit of a rush as I posted.

But surely "these shores" means the Dominion of Canada: A mari usque ad mare! The Black Watch has yet to depart the vast land between those shores!

Dang it! Did I let my American-ness show twice in one thread?
