I've noticed, too. our brothers from the other side of the Great Pond are much more focused in exact matching. For me (us) it doesn't have to be so strict. But everyone is free to do in his own way, right?

You'll notice I'm not disagreeing. I'm just having fun seeing if I can match a stripe. The SWK saffron is migrating from fun to challenge at this point. I am retired with time on my hands - "idle hands....." Both colors - four pair - of brown that I have will work fine here and with several other kilts I have. I'm just hard headed enough and a perfectionist enough to continue trying - Don Quixote, tilting at wind mills?

The variety of "saffrons" out there make me think even the pros have a rough time hitting this color consistantly.

The old traditional natural dyed saffron used a variety of plants other than the saffron flower to get the color - was too rare and expensive in old times. Garments had to be re dyed about once a year as this one fades pretty fast in the sun. The saffron flower can also produce color from yellow to orange to red depending on how much of each part of the flower you use and the variety you are using.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

This round is Ocean Blue using two packages of dye for two pair of socks. I wanted to insure full saturation and see if this Dylon would go darker doubleing the dye. It dosen't. It was a bit scary as the dye mix and socks both looked dark purple - until I rinsed the socks in the cold rinse - suspect the purple is a temporary space holder to keep the dyed fabric color from getting darker than the package color when used at less than the stated weight of fabric.

The Kilt is Rocky's Heratage of Scotland Casual and the socks are very close to the kilts blue stripe.
Color is dead on and one shade lighter.

I pictured the package as I noticed on the UK sites the colors and packaging seem different for this permanent Dylon dye. It is not the one for use in the washing machines.

Picture came out well considering I had the kilt on at the time.

    Juzo coloring update

Been a while so this is an update of what I have now:
All but the dark green ( bottom center) have been washed and worn more than 3 times and half dryer/ half hang dried.
The Juzos are supposed to be hang dried - I cheat a little

Listed from left to right, then top to bottom - The old ones refer back to the post number.

Intense Violet - from post 1
    Green - from post 1

Intense violet - from post 6
Ocean Blue - from post 13
"Army green" - these are the Light Greens from post 1 overdyed with Goldfish Orange (with the orange pair). Yes, this is another try at saffron.
    Dark Brown - post 4 run 3
Goldfish Orange - ran with the "army green" above.

    Black - factory original
Jeans Blue - aka Indigo blue - post 4 run 2
Dark Green - ran 2 pair and double dye - once again proving double dye will not get you darker than package color.
(Dark) Terra Cotta - post 1
While - factory original and what I start with for dying.

NOTE AGAIN - these are the "cutsy" color names Dylon uses in the US and I think Canada. In the UK the color names differ. Most are light to dark pure normal colors versus designer colors.

Since the last sock dying episode Dylon has really cut down on their primary color dyes.
So for this round in trying to match 5 of my kilts golden yellow stripes and 3 that have red stripes I have started using Tulip brand dyes.
The 2 pair of gold socks were first dyed with Dylon Sunflower Yellow and came out looking like I had an incontenance problem very light yellow.
Hunting for a golder and darker shade, I overdyed with 1/10 packet (17gm) of Dylon Goldfish Orange and 2 packets of Tulip brand Yellow. It came out very well for all - matching 2 kilts dead on, 1 golder and 2 yellower (in daylight).

The red socks. I dyed one pair with Dylon "Tulip Red" color they came out pinkish (see NASCAR tartan post).
I then overdyed that pair and a new white pair with two packets Tulip brand red. Seems about 2 shades too dark.

These results are after the first wash and hang dry cycle on both. Hoping the red will settle a tad lighter in the next two washes. I use color catcher cloths when washing to let me know when fading/bleeding has stopped and they are safe to wash with lighter clothes. Hasn't failed me - yet...

I know - It looks like I dressed in the dark again.

Actually, yesterday and today I am wearing my Utilikilt Survival in Desert Digital camo ( shades of tan and brown) and the red socks and gold socks look A-OK with this kilt. Of course some colors seem to be universal in going with other colors. Or at least not clashing .

Tulip brand is the same type dye as Dylon but as seen here doubling the dye does increase color saturation with the Tulip brand. The socks came out several shades darker than the packet color. Listed poundage / per packet (1/2 pound fabric) is the same for both.
