Hamish, it's a national holiday honoring the flag and the men and women who have fought for it. Kind of a Memorial Day redundancy As for the parade, any excuse will do for a celebration.

Thanks for that Bubba. A bit like our Rememberance Sunday (in November) I expect, when we remember and give thanks for all those who fought for our freedom from the 1914/18 war to the present day.
We don't seem to go in for parades here, like you do. The last one I saw was at the time of Her Majesty's Coronation in 1953, when I stood with my father for seven hours in the rain waiting for the great parade in London. That one took three hours to pass by! I'm ashamed to admit that we don't fly our flag much either (except at the present time when every other car has the St. George's flag fluttering in honour of the European Football shindig that's just started in Portugal!)
I admire the way in which you North Americans fly the flag from virtually every house. If we want to do that, with a flagpole, we have to apply for and obtain local planning permission, which can take months, and is often refused. So most of us don't bother, Sad, eh?

Hamish,
In Norway ,well infact all Scandinavia. Every household has a means to run up a flag.Usually just for birthdays .There is of course official flag days when everyone puts a flag up the pole.
No planning permission, just patriotism and little else required.Other than aflag that is . Just thought I'd share

Get a load of this, Ham. A collegue of mine (God knows what he was thinking at the time!!) stopped one such car and told the driver to remove the English flag because it was RACIST!!!!!!! Can you believe that?
Frankly the answer is YES. UK police officers are so afraid of being accused of racism we tend to go overboard and over compensate. The irony is that a lot of our Asian community on South Tyneside are driving around displaying ...........yes, you've guessed.....ENGLAND FLAGS!!!!!

Americans will observe Flag Day this year on June 14 in memory of day in 1777 when the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.

Alaskan, I imagine that you, like me, actually sing the national anthem when it's played, as opposed to many people who just stand and listen as if they don't know the words.

At least you're singing, though. I was told that it's a good song for theater auditions too, just because of its difficulty (just in case you were planning on getting the lead role for "The Sound Of Music").

That lump in your throat is called pride, mate. Whether it's for where you live, or for where you are from.
