Sgian Dubh from Kult of Athena

I just got a Sgian Dubh from Kult of Athena. They have them from $5 to $65 plus sharpening for $10 if you wish. I wish - never know when a steak needs cutting or a cat skinning -

I think they are suppliers for the reinactment crowd mostly.

Now I have to learn how to wear it "correctly".
Got it jammed in my compression sock now - quite comfy and secure. Knife comes out sheath stays.

Tis sharpened at a pretty high angle. Too high for slicing tomatoes.
It looks like stainless. The blade had a Made in India sticker. The sheath is leather or leatherete covered. The handle is well polished wood or plastic. After the made in India sticker is removed, removal of the blade from sheath is zero force. Just tucked it deeper in my sock - LOL For the price I think it is a good purchase.
UPDATE a touch of gentle hammer work on sheath and the removal force is A-OK.

Sorry - kilt is too high - slipped up when I was kneeling to fuss with camera - LOL I try to hide the OF wrinkles above my knees.

You will find that the top inch/inch and a half of your SD poking out of the top of your hose will be the most comfortable for normal wear and you will be less likely to loose it that way too. Perfect kilt height!

LOL Jock, I like the hem at the top of my knobby knees.
The hardest part of this is getting "Skeean doo" out of Sgian Dubh orally and I keep trying to spell it Spigan doo - Don't ask, I have no answer.LOL

That point on the lower chrome piece on the sheath hangs in my sock and keeps it from slipping out. The upper keeps it from sliding in deeper. - Neat.
To remove sheath I have to slide my hand in over it to unhook it from the sock. With a sharpened blade, I am not sure I would want to resheath with the sheath below the hose top.... At least no major blood vessels are near?

I like the top of the knee height too and your picture shows MY definition of the top of the knee perfectly!

Good lord man you don't take the sheath out!

To put the SD back you have to poke about a bit inside the hose, it does take a bit of practice!

LOL and blood loss. The top of the sheath is a quarter inch above the sock top and the twin sheath points keep it there. The SD's bottom handle band, actually extends over the sheath an eighth inch fully inserted and friction locks it in. Beats "digging around in the dark" with a truly sharp point - LOL.
Look out frogs! It's giggin time - tastes like chicken.

I picked this one a lot because of the sheath points after reading about Ron's (Riverkilt) slipping away. I believe this is the Authentic, practical sheath design. Dem points ain't just purdy! Yes, I spent some time in the Ozarks growing up -

I would have saved the ten bucks and sharpened it myself. The handle is wood. The blade may be stainless. I have never had one to rust on me but most of the Indian makers provide carbon steel blades. IMHO you are wearning the sgian too far out of your hose. Also, be very careful about leaving the sheath in the hose because I have put holes in my expensive merino hose trying to put the bare blade back in. One time, while preparing for a formal dinner in Scotland, I put a hole in my leg that way!!

I am quite careful, but am concerned with a little kid grabbing it "to just look at it" and maiming one of us.....
Caught between safety of a dull blade and idiocy of carrying an unusable tool.

LOL - just posting about it - I can feel the sheath against my calf - and I don't have it on

I'm newly kilted, didn't have a sgian dubh and as I mentioned above, didn't really want an ornate one. After Chuck started this thread I checked out the Kult of Athena site and ordered their "Generation 2" model for $30.60. It arrived yesterday and I'm pleased with it.

With a minimum effort the blade took a decent enough edge for any of the chores it's likely to see. It's size, weight and flat side make it more than comfortable tucked inside my hose. At some point I may be looking for an antler handled SD for dressier wear, but for casual wear this suits me just fine.
