Tartan tie

Such a curious bunch!!

All the kilts are wool, the 40+yr old is a 7yd 14oz Ancient MacDonald tartan, the 10yr old is the same except in MacDonald of Clanranald, and the new one is an 8yd 16oz Ancient MacDonald of the Isles Hunting - spot the MacDonald connection!! The walking kilt is a 5yd 11oz but I don't know the tartan - bought it as a new kilt on ebay last year but the seller didn't know the tartan either. However, as it's a TFCK I rather suspect it may just be a made-up one.

The countryside shots were taken in the Lake District last week - the one with the trees is just outside Keswick above Coniston Water and the wall one is somewhere between Keswick and Ambleside. There is another wall shot taken when I was not quite ready and I thought about posting as an example of how NOT to sit on a wall when being photographed (knees up), and although decency is preserved nevertheless I thought better of it in case I caused offence to some!

However, the 2 outdoor shots used show how easy it is to change from outdoor casual to reasonably smart enough for eating-out simply by pulling up the socks and adding a sporran when you come back down off the hills.

Robbie, are we to assume that the forty-year-old kilts were made for you originally and that you have been wearing them all your life?

The 40yr old one was made for another member of the family and I acquired it about 30yrs ago - bit of a struggle to still get into it but I'm rather fond of it and persevere!

With regard to how long I've been wearing kilts, I'm one of the (regrettably) few Scots who have worn only kilts since primary school.

And I'm one of the (regrettably) relatively few Canadians that dares to wear a kilt outside of a formal or organized event. Better late than never.

You see, Robbie. You are more than just an 'average' guy. It's a shame more Scots don't wear a kilt more routinely. But, then, if kiltwearing became universally popular, they'd be no need for sites like these.

Regarding tartan ties and hose......

After reading through this thread, it seems to me that there are no hard and fast rules. I say wear what looks good, respectful and respectable.

At a formal occasion last week, I wore a tartan tie with the kilt, and white hose, along with a more modern ensemble. The comments I got were uniformly positive. And, to my relief, no one said that white hose and tartan ties are for children (at least, no one said this to my face).
