Proportions - does this sound right?
I've got the order for my first kilt in the basket and just thought I'd run my inexperienced-companion-taken measurements through some more experienced minds first; that they sound at least partially sane (I know this could be hard without a photo...). I'm 6'4" and 86kg (190lb), so of reasonably slim build:
- Length 24"
- Waist 32.5"
- Seat 39.5"
and for a jacket, I've got a 42" Long.
It would be great if someone roughly my height could just confirm that (in particular) the length is logical, as I'm dreading picking up a miniskirt or hostess skirt from the mail in a month's time!
Thanks a bunch, will post pics when I get it!

In my experience, yes it sounds right on. I'm 6'3", and a little more stout through the middle, closer to 250 lbs. I think you did well with those measurements, is the kilt maker putting in a rise? Bear in mind, you'll have some leeway depending on where on your hips you wear it. Enjoy your new kilt, I hope it gets to you quickly.

At 6'4", I think the 24" length might be a tad short. Measure and inch or two above the navel (for traditional wearing) and measure to, either, the top of the knee or mid-knee. Good luck!

For what it's worth from another newbie: You may want to double check the length. I'm about 2" shorter than you and 24" breaks perfectly at mid-knee for me. Of course it depends on how high or low you wear it but I understand your concern about ending up with a miniskirt!

You don't mention what kind of kilt you'll be ordering.
Casual Kilts are generally worn on the "pants waist". Traditional Kilts are worn higher on the torso, generally an inch or so above the navel. At 6'4", the 24" length you mention sounds appropriate for a Casual Kilt, but would be way too short for a Traditional Kilt. I'm only 5'9", and my 8yd traditional is 24" in length.
So if you can provide a little more info regarding the kilt you are looking to buy, it might help others give you a sanity check on your numbers.

I would agree that 24" is too short for a traditional kilt. I'm 6ft and my kilts are 24.5-25" and I'm a similar build to your waste size. I think even for a casual kilt 24" may be a bit too short at 6'4".
What type of kilt are you ordering and what method did you use to measure the length of the kilt you'll need?

Speaking as a kiltmaker, I always ask the customer to give me the measurements that I ask for, every maker works slightly differently and it's very hard to judge without seeing the client, so we have to rely on what we are given. As kilts are often made for the individual it's a straightforward things for the maker to make a kilt that fits properly, as long as the measurements are correct.I would not second guess anyones measurements, sometimes I get numbers that seem strange or unlikely, but upon further checking they were right, no two people have the same body shape and variations are the norm.
However I would think that if you have measured 24" and are 6"4" the lenght "might" be short.
My message is, talk to the kiltmaker and follow his or her measurements, and then you will be sure of a good fit.

All true, depends on the maker. I have several kilts that I ordered at 24", with the expectation of the maker adding the 2" rise, which gets me a 26" kilt, as I said, looks good to me. Given the resources on Xmarks, you could probably ask, and receive an answer, regarding how your chosen maker's measurements run. And I'm sure the maker would be more than happy to talk to you, and answer any questions you might have about your measurements if it is a concern to you. I'm sure they would much rather produce something that's worn and enjoyed than something that hangs in a closet because it doesn't fit quite right.

Send a PM to Matt Newsome. He's your same size almost exactly.
