OK, just saw a follow-up report from the regional paper. It seems that Steve did indeed commit suicide, rather than it being an accident.
How horrible, and how sad.
John Robertson in Blair Atholl tells me the church was packed out for his funeral. Many, many people are feeling his loss this summer.
