No, you got that wrong. The cloth is 27" wide, joined to make 56"x9' and there are two pieces that size. We have also estabished that the cloth has a herringbone selvedge at the unjoined edge.

All I can say is that the trim (which still exposes the edge oddly enough) indicates to me that it was (they were) likely a decorative(s) piece, perhaps curtains or a bed cover or table cloth even.

Curtains in a large window indeed although not a Manor House, that's an English term, but a large house nonetheless.

The use as curtains has been established and the lace is definitely decorative but....... look again at the stucture of the cloth, its size, setting etc., think about its age, and now think again.

It looks to me like there is only one full repeat in each of the woven sections, so I'm guessing they increased the thread count to weave as large a set as possible. I'm no good at discerning the size of the yarn, but could be large as well.

You're nearly right; a full repeat plus a small section that continues into the herringbone selvedge.

Yes it's a large sett (22") but that does not mean that the threadcount was increased. Increased from what?

As for the yarn size, the cloth is finished at about 64 epi which means that it is actually quite fine.
