Well too large by contemporary standards but don't get side tracked by that comment. There was no kilt use in this case but........?

And I think too light for such.

    I'm stumped too.

Well done . An old plaid that has been reused although whether it was worn as a feileadh mor is difficult to say although I agree with Xman that it's probably too light although do the maths and you'll see that it would have been 6 yds so possible to pleat all the way around like that in the Duffus portrait.

There are a couple of obvious things no-one's yet asked and/or observed. Quickly now, it's almost June.

I'm surprised that no-one asked where the piece is or had a crack at the sett. Details are here. See also the embedded link for the companion paper.

... The historical importance of this plaid in the story of tartan cannot be emphasised too strongly. ...

...Many C18th portraits of Highland nobility show the sitter wearing predominantly red tartans indicating their wealth and social status. We cannot be certain to whom it belonged but it could conceivably be the "madder red" plaid mentioned in the valuation of the Chief’s effects on his death in 1737...

...The plaid is an important link in our understanding of tartan as a rural art form before the popularisation and commercialisation that took place in the early 1800s. It is also a fine example of the pre-1800 traditional tartan weaving techniques that are no longer practiced by the commercial tartan industry...
Fascinating! Absolutely fascinating. Cheers for bringing that to us Peter. I get great enjoyment from these "Tartan of the Month" threads, even though I don't have much I can contribute.

I should also have mentioned that after the Coat from Culloden I consider this to be possibly the most significant find in recent years.
