That's a very nice hat to wear with kilts!

    The Kiwis agree

I might point out that that style of hat is called here in the Western US the "Montana Peak" and in the latter 19th century was considered THE cowboy hat par excellence

and it was widely adopted in the USA by the military and police, so yes it was the WWI Doughboy hat, but still today the Drill Instructor hat in the USMC and the State Troopers' hat in various states etc etc.

Here it is in situ (notice all the hats have flat brims; the style of hat which we consider to be a classic "cowboy hat" today, with the brim turned up on each side, appears to be a 20th century invention)

BTW the Aussies wore a slightly different style, even the pipers

and here is a Massed Bands in the USA wearing cowboy hats.

A good panama hat will last for years. The one that I'm wearing was purchased in 1979, and is still going strong.

This photo was posted by SlackerDrummer in the Glasgow, KY Highland Games thread. I quite like the look this fellow has going on with his hat.

I don't know the brand/maker of the hat, but it looks like a Tilley hat, or similar. And it has that well-worn-in look, as if it's been crushed many times. He's obviously judging a competition, and will be out in the sun all day (though it looks like he found some shade), so the hat seems like a wise choice, even with the fact that he's wearing a jacket and tie. And IMHO the hat really coordinates nicely with the casual, outdoorsy feel of his weathered tartan, despite the fact that he's in 'smart daywear' mode. All around, I think this gentleman has made a superb compromise between being dressed for the part of judge, whilst being practical and comfortable with his headwear. It's a look I admire.

Boy Scouts of America know it as the Campaign Hat. Same thing, basically. Smokey the Bear hat.

Indeed. Same as Marine Corps Drill Instructors...the coveted, " Green Smokey," in which us Marine Corps recruits came to fear and to respect!

Thanks to Ron, I now sport my Tilley Airflo wide brims " when ever the sun shines" here AKA everyday. Looks a hell of a lot less dorky than the ball caps and sunscreen I was wearing.. We Cool!

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

I like this look too, Tobus, and I agree with you in regards to the chap's compromise of traditional Highland dress and a good hat for protection against the sun. Hmmm, so thus far, I am fond of the Tilley and Panama style hats in place of a Balmoral for certain occassions - we shall see!

    Cheers,

His ears were already red and starting to blister.

You could get a Pith Helmet and then join the Pith Helmet Enthusiasts Group.
Yes, I love the pith helmet option in sunny warmer weather but prefer the "East Indian" style with my kilt. Also like the Drill-Sergeant/Smokie look too -- I'll have to look into getting one of those as well

This looks like a well worn Filson packer hat.

    http://www.filson.com/products/tin-c...taProduct=1011

Filson is a Seattle company so its designs have been driven by cold, wet weather. The tin cloth is heavy duty waxed cotton. Doesn't provide much ventilation on hot days but is a good sun hat on cool days and an excellent hat in the rain. Nearly indestructible.
