I always advocate buying cheaply first time round. Until you start wearing one you won't know what you need or want (sometimes two different things). Size, ease of use, how much stuff you need to cart round and the noise the tassels make are all important issues.
Buy cheap and cheerful, wear it a few times and then decide. I can also recommend the Stillwater Nightstalker range.

I'm up to 27 of Rocky's kilts now I think....like the semi-trads the best but have a bunch of casuals and my Gordon Modern is a casual but if I had to do it over would have done it in semi-trad. You'll be most pleased.
