Tobus, Kyle, That gentleman is Ed Krintz, piping/ensemble judge for the EUSPBA. He's a consummate professional when he's judging - very little chit-chat (at least when I've been around him) and always well-dressed.

With a bit of looking, the campaign hat (the War Dept. called it thus as well back in 1911). is available in a number of colors and material. There's the common (military/scouting) olive felt, black/grey/brown/navy straws (sheriff's departments). There's even a scarlet one for the RCMP Drill Instructors.

Back before my kilt addiction flared I went to Festival of the West type gigs rather than highland games. At one, a custom hatmaker convinced me to let him make a "cowboy hat" styled for my face etc. Bought it. Sometimes wear it with kilts. Had it on today.

Be sure to include the military jacket to complete the ensemble.

Even with the wide brim, we get a lot of reflected sun off the sand. And absolutely fried on the lakes without sunscreen.

I am starting to get the idea that the high latitude, low altititude guys don't realize just how stupid a brimless hat is down in the sunbelt and at high altitude. We pretty much all visit a dermatologist yearly to see what the sun has started "this time".

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Is that Ed? His wife gives me lessons. From what I know Ed is a top-notch player. Also has a great taste in cars (VW buses).

I wore a NPS Smokey Bear hat for 10 years. I still miss it.

'Fancied brimmed hats since childhood...and donning a baseball-style cap makes this writer's IQ appear to instantly drop dramatically. Wrong face there for.

Ergo, a hat collection of Bush, varied fedoras, cowboy or two, Tilley vent-crown, Equator with the drop-down neck drape (wish it had a wider brim). Woven "cowboy sombrero-Panama" with six-inch brim for yard work.Yes, with sunscreen when out in the bright.

Campaign hats are a Good Thing. They had their origins in the slouch hats favored by veteran troops in the American Civil War. A kepi may be rakish, but a good broad-brimmed hat will keep the sun and rain off you.
