'Saltire' Kilt "To The Flag" - How?
I'm sure you've all come across it once or more in your online travels: the Saltire kilt, pleated "to the flag". I'm still undecided on whether I like it or not, but I've racked my brain many times over how this can actually work with a regular weave of tartan - especially since the apron gives no hint how it's done. Can anyone explain exactly how it's done? If it is woven 'normally', what would it look like before pleating?
I have a strong suspicion there's some sort of cheating going on, but a striking effect nonetheless!
Here's a pic, for those who have no idea what I'm on about:

Although not the Saltire kilt this Rampant Lion one is woven by the same company and shows how thess 'theme' kilts are done.

Great pics, Steve! A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say.
House of Edgar are responsible for both of those designs, and many other "theme kilts" (or "emblem kilts"). They use highly sophisticated and computerized Jacquard looms which are capable of wearing such designs into the cloth. A far cry from a traditional tartan, but certainly an interesting effect!

I like them, especially the lion. House of Edgar sells "Theme tartan" http://www.houseofedgar.com/acatalog...ed_Plaids.html
It would be a different effect but might be interesting.
Anyone know the size of these setts?

I like the Saltire. I don't know if I'd want to walk around with that lion putting his paw "there" though.
