I must break from tradition hat-wise to keep the sun at bay. Kilted or not, I wear a mix of hats: Several varieties of Outdoor Research Stitka Sombrero, Minnetonka Outback hat, Bailey Cutler, and Stetson Drifter. You can Google these to see them. I also wear a variety of bolo ties with kilts, suits, blazers, and 'office casual". The hat is important. If you have a problem with the sun, you had best stand under a good hat regardless of what you are wearing from the neck down.

I leave it in the truck so I can use it when I get out of the truck.. This is my cheap 'knock around' hat. It doesn't really shrink that much; just a little tight when I first put it on.

greetings,
flamme's dad had same he wore a wide brim lid ..like an orivis fly fishing rain hat ..hot though ..I saw ex ww1 soldiers wearing ..aussie digger lids ..farming thought it was cool . Else dressed up ..Scots in SA in Boer War and India wore ..pith helmets ..see breaker Morant movie ..
I alwasy had on a Tom Kite/jazz lid ..it worked okay ..else go to a horse tack joint trail riders and ask them ..they'll tell you what works ..warning ..any paint smell on straw turns my stomach ..check out a "flats" fly fishing guide or gear ..like bonefishing gear ..aussies too ..they beat the heat ..I also liked many sea grass lids I saw ..
Theoretically John Wayne's name was Marion Morrison ..Ma was a Morrison ..Duke had a huge lid in the Searchers ..head to a COWBOY/tack shop and cowboy up ..see something later you can change as you know the product ..and needs ..
regards,
d

For a couple of years now I've been tying a bandana over my noggin during the Games to protect the top of my head. Well, that it does, but I am getting very tired of finishing every Games with a sunburned face. I sweat like Niagra falls, sunscreen just does not stay on. Enough. The bucket hat goes in my workout bag as of now and damn the sartorial consequences.
BTW, at the Santa Cruz/Loch Lmond Games this past weekend I wore a Lindsay, modern kilt and teamed it up with a Lindsay tartan flat cap, just to annoy everyone who had to look at me on Saturday when I wasn't throwing. Remarkably, only Panache seemed to notice at all!

From the picture put up, I thought you looked grand in Lindsay Kilt and flat cap. But then you shouldn't want to be guided my my dreadful sartorial example.

I have several straw hats for the warm months, but only the Jaxon Classic Optimo Panama do I wear with the kilt, and only outdoors. It was a cheap price and I like the way it can be rolled up and packed (although, I have not done this, yet). Unfortunately, I have no photos.
I used to wear a straw broad-brimmed "cowboy", not unlike Riverkilt's, when I would go to the Texas Scottish Festival in June. This was before my panama. And, believe me, in that heat, you didn't care whether it went with the kilt or not.

they had flashes I assume for either rank or unit ..usually a big diamond ..back of the head ..
-they weren't very stylish ..
