Wide brim hats vs. tam, Glengarry, Balmoral, etc.

My face was getting too much Sun recently so I switched to my wide-brimmed hat .... do what is practical.



This was taken a while back ... but now that it's pretty much summer, this hat serves a more practical purpose.

I have a wide brimmed rigid leather hat I wear for around town but for travel, its not practical. I bought a tilley as they can take abuse in a suitcase and still look great. They also come with a guarantee for replacement if they ever wear out. They also have a limited lost replacement guarantee.
They also come in 13 different sizes...

I have a tilley white and the winter tilly that I have worn with my kilts. Work great!

I don't know the brand/maker of the hat, but it looks like a Tilley hat, or similar. And it has that well-worn-in look, as if it's been crushed many times. He's obviously judging a competition, and will be out in the sun all day (though it looks like he found some shade), so the hat seems like a wise choice, even with the fact that he's wearing a jacket and tie. And IMHO the hat really coordinates nicely with the casual, outdoorsy feel of his weathered tartan, despite the fact that he's in 'smart daywear' mode. All around, I think this gentleman has made a superb compromise between being dressed for the part of judge, whilst being practical and comfortable with his headwear. It's a look I admire.

I'm seeing ..straw/sea grass kilmarnocks (big whoppin UFO old style Tam O' Shanters) made by wifies wi' guid basket makin skills ..

some yutz out in the liberry here has the dreadlocks and a fruit basket cornucopia from a lady's crtaft shop on his head ..I see no benefit to this forum .

For a couple of years now I've been tying a bandana over my noggin during the Games to protect the top of my head. Well, that it does, but I am getting very tired of finishing every Games with a sunburned face. I sweat like Niagra falls, sunscreen just does not stay on. Enough. The bucket hat goes in my workout bag as of now and damn the sartorial consequences.

BTW, at the Santa Cruz/Loch Lmond Games this past weekend I wore a Lindsay, modern kilt and teamed it up with a Lindsay tartan flat cap, just to annoy everyone who had to look at me on Saturday when I wasn't throwing. Remarkably, only Panache seemed to notice at all!

Indeed I noticed my friend Alan's unspeakable headgear and with great regret sent my minions to pummel him senseless for his great offense to common kilted decency...






...somehow he didn't seem to mind too much.

Let that be a lesson to you Alan!!!

I hate hats! I swear that it was having to wear them for five years in the military that made my hair fallout. Now I have to wear a hat but really haven't found any that I like. Only exception is with wearin the kilt, feel wrong if I don't wear one. But wide brimmed makes sense.
