Because they can't control the marketing of products in an existing tartan.

Have to agree Chas. It's actually worse in cloth - look here

I wouldn't be surprised if Disney created a range of products in cotton, there is no reason why they shouldn't!
I say this because it would be beter than PV or acrylic and lighter for warmer climets

Cotton isn't a great idea for kilts as it creases so easily, PV would be fine I suppose but a lighter weight wool like 13oz would still be better than cotton.
I've never ever suggest Acrylic, it's just not very nice - compared to wool , or even PV

Gosh - the green just disappears!
Not a good design, I think.

From what I hear they specifically steered away from existing clan tartans because they did not want it to look like they were attempting to identify with any actual clan or family.
Plus, as the movie is ostensibly set in the 11th century, there would be no clan tartans anyway. Or no kilts for that matter, but then again this is not the first time Hollywood has gotten historic Scottish clothing wrong. :-)

I saw a kilt made from cotton tartan material once. Not good. You are quit correct that it wrinkles like the dickens and really didn't hang well at all. Cotton is a great material with many fine clothing applications, but kilts just ain't one of 'em.

Hoping to see the movie tomorrow at a nearby drive-in theater. Double feature with The Avengers.

Old School!
I'm planning a trip out with the family for Sunday afternoon. I really love Pixar movies for families. They're intelligent and meaningful in ways that most others simply aren't and they seem to be getting better too.
