Some quick sgian dhub's!
So we were in Franklin, NC this past weekend for the Taste of Scotland festival, which was cancelled but will be back next year. Anyway, there was still a Scottish dinner on Saturday evening, and there was a fun competition for those who came in appropriate attire. I had packed everything I needed, but realized when I got there I had forgotten flashes and my sgian dhub! The flashes were not a real problem, the Tartan museum was right downtown, and so picked up some garter ties, but really did not want to buy a new sgian dhub for this occasion. When we got back to the friends we were stating with, I noticed he had a nice piece of wood standing in the garage from some trimming last year, so it was nice and dry. I looked it over and decided I would see what I could pull together for he and I both to have a sgian for the evening's dinner. Here are some quick pictures. Note that I had to make do with what was available in the garage, and had only about 1.5 hours to pull this together, and not much in the way of woodworking tools. Oh, and these are actually sgian don'ts, as they are actually bottle openers, which is OK with me, I need a bottle opener more often than I need a knife in my sock!

Nice job, McGuiver.
If you want to do more of these and make them a bit more durable, use a hack saw to cut off the pail opener end so that you have a uniform shaft diameter. Clamp it in a vice and use an appropriate die to thread the bottom of the shaft with coarse threads. Drill out your handle with a bit matching the shaft diameter and screw in the opener. Works like a dream with no wobble and no need for glue.

Thanks TH, I actually did take off the pail opener end, and just drilled the shaft slightly undersized, then used a little elbow grease to get them into the shaft. They aren't going any where, and since I didn't have any glue, that is a good thing!
